This film did not intend to be, nor was billed as a film about mental illness but it handled the subject with the dirty, gritty honesty the illness deserves. Most films treat the mentally ill in a hokey way whereas Joker gave people a glimpse into the life of someone with illnesses who has, like most Americans, been let down and ignored at every turn. Joker explores what it’s truly like to try your hardest with what you have and being beaten down each time you get back up. It’s gritty reality of life for the “lower classes” will force you to uncomfortably sit in the disdain the more privileged have for the less fortunate. At each moment it shows you each thing that aided in the growth of the anger within Arthur and Gotham as a whole.
