Though the movie itself was too dark to really describe as enjoyable, I did enjoy the acting quality of the entire cast. The combination the claustrophobic setting of the family house interior contrasted with the shots of the expansiveness of the plains, to me, was effective in setting the mood.
Seeing the family dysfunction passed down 3 generations, at least, was emotionally draining for me to watch; so much so, that I was grateful for the tidbit of comic relief, of Charles (Maggie’s husband, to me the sanest character of the group) mocking the teenage girl’s dietary philosophy opposing eating meat (digesting the fear of animals about to be slaughtered).
