Am I a jerk for not loving this book?
Yes, the writing is elegant and erudite. Perhaps more so than any book I have ever read. I might even revisit the book just to study how it is written.
It exists at a level of sophistication that one hardly ever encounters.
It is dreamlike and likeable in a sort of "how could you not like this" way.
But it has almost no plot. No structure as is normally understood.
It just rambles on and on and on with digession upon digression-- elipses within elipses within elipses within elipses--- making it nearly impossible to remember any specific thing--- just a blur or impression.
Sorry--- while the writing gorgeous and extraordinary, I do like a book with some sort of discernable plotline. Otherwise it's hard to keep track of anything. More like a very lengthy poem than a novel.
If you like that sort of thing, go for it.
