I wanted to review while it was still fresh in my mind I was, at first upset that there was so much Spanish but not subtitles. Soon enough, it just felt right to move between Spanish and English and Puerto Rican characters as well as Anglo characters admonish with "In English please!"
The dancing was explosive, passionate and yet natural. The actors looked like real people instead of from central casting. The movie put real motivations behind the characters. They were really fleshed out.
I am glad that they kept and fleshed out (a little) the character of "nobodys", the girl who hangs around the Jets, but I feel like the character is no longer a tomboy or a rough and tumble girl, they seem to go immediately to a very modern gender non non-binary stance. It brought me out of the late 50's with an uncomfortable shock.
i cried a lot. a lot. you care about these characters. they are not perfect. you tell that every writer, artist, actor, dancer, director gave it their heart and soul. the ending was just 10x than the original.
