I absolutely LOVE this film. Heart wrenching at times and genuinely funny at exactly the right moments, this complex story of devastating loss, friendship and redemption grips your heart and your interest. Adam Sandler is a revelation as a man barely surviving a devastating personal loss who has sealed himself off in a world of denial, incalculable pain and willful isolation. While Don Cheadle has given us many outstanding finely drawn performances, his portrayal of Sandler’s old friend and current lifeline is exquisitely nuanced - so understated at times that we almost miss it’s power and intense emotional range. The chaos and atmosphere of NYC, particularly the night scenes, provides the perfect backdrop for the complexity and emotional darkness of much of this film and the stellar performances of Sandler and Cheadle. Don’t miss this one, especially if you haven’t been a fan of Sandler’s often over the top comedies, his performance here proves his talent has hidden depths.
