If you’re a REAL Sopranos fan then you’re not going to be thoroughly entertained. It’s great to see some of our favorite characters reprised on film but it just didn’t give me that feeling the series had. This storyline had the potential to expand to maybe 1 or 2 more films if they didn’t bunch it up. Too much was packed into that 2 hour bit. I do understand that the story was meant to introduce Dickie and focus on his influence on Tony but it was hard to connect the two characters with teenage Tony only getting 20 minutes of screen time.
I really wish the film moved at a slower pace. Hard to connect the dots when new scenes and situations are coming at you. So many characters needed more speaking roles and screen time. We needed time to indulge these characters again. I wish they had a shot at remaking this, we deserve a better, lengthier film and David Chase deserves another shot at getting this thing right.
I really wish they expanded the story with Tony’s father and his relationship with Livia. I wish we could have seen younger Tony have one of his spells. I wish the actress who played teenage Janice was heavy set so we could hear Livia bicker about her size how Tony said she did. Small things like that would have given you a deeper understanding on T’s upbringing and WHY he looked to Dickie for leadership & mentorship.
They honestly did a better job recreating Tony’s childhood in the series’ flashbacks.
