I have very mixed feelings about this movie. I mean, I loved the original Trollhunters show and 3Below and Wizards (the second two to a lesser degree) and I had high hopes for this movie. From here, I'll be talking about certain parts of the movie, so if you haven't seen it, spoiler alert.
There were a few small issues for me and then one huge one that I'll get to later. The first is Aja. Aja in 3Below was a fun character but in the movie I felt like her whole character was just off. She wasn't acting like herself at all.
I also didn't like Jim's 'am I really a hero without the amulet' character arc. We covered that in the original show in the episode 'Unbecoming.' There are other things they could've done with his character.
The whole Steve thing was just weird as well I don't know what that was.
Now. Onto the main issue. The ending. I thought Toby's internal conflict over just being the side kick the whole movie was really well done and his sacrifice tied into that really well. Until Jim decided to erase everything and go back in time because of it.
I get it. He's your best friend and you're upset. Fair enough. But I think this was more the creators. The audience has been with it for three whole shows, and now you just want to undo everything? We spent valuable time with these characters and now it's all just pointless because none of it happened. It's just telling the audience they wasted their time.
I still gave this movie two stars because the animation was really good and other than the points mentioned above I really enjoyed the story. I think some of the deaths were done pretty well. The rest of the shows were incredible as well which is why I watched the movie.
It's just a shame about the ending. I'm quite disappointed about how they ended the series.
