To be honest, I had my doubts about this movie because stuff that's hyped usually disappoints me in the end story-wise and character-wise. But Promare met my expectations and I ended up loving the story and almost all of it's characters, including the supporting and minor characters who didn't get enough screen time or development and I wish they had in this 2-hour movie. The villains except Biar Colossus were written pretty well to be despicable and abhorrent to the audience. Biar was just there as Kray's assistant. As for anti-villain, Heris Ardebit. She was written rather messily. She is made out to be a misunderstood, sympathetic antagonist who is only trying to protect her little sister, Aina Ardebit from the manipulative main villain but in her introductory scene, we see her smile over the results of the inhumane, excruciatingly-painful Burnish experiment without showing any worry or concern for the victim who was just experimented on.
As for the two main characters of the movie, Galo Thymos and Lio Fotia, they are the ones who get the most screen time and development since the movie is mainly about them and their developing relationship. Their relationship was a bit rushed because of the time restraints caused by the 2-hour run time of the movie but it was done well for the most part. Their chemistry through their interactions was super-fun to watch as they go from enemies to allies once they reconcile their differences to fight their real enemies.
So yeah, I give Promare 4 out of 5 stars for the animation, visuals, music, fight scenes, the characters(mainly the main leads Galo and Lio), and the simmering hinted-romantic chemistry between Galo and Lio.
My biggest gripes with the film how all the other characters besides Galo, Lio, Kray, and Vulcan were either underwritten(everyone else not mentioned) or sloppily-written(Heris Ardebit) and the film could be a bit longer to flesh out all the other characters.
