I was so excited when I first saw the trailer for The Northman, as I highly enjoy historical epics for the most part. Nevertheless, the only thing I can give credit for my excitement is how disingenuous the trailers were. The marketing company probably knew it was going to be a failure so they tried to mask it by marketing it as an epic Viking revenge story. What this film turned out to be was way worse than underwhelming, it was downright horrendous.
Where should I even start from? The plot can barely be admitted as a plot, as it is no more existent than its cardboard characters, holding no real emotional value throughout the whole 2-hour runtime, all the while being completely disjointed and meaningless. I can only imagine the writers thinking "what's popular right now? Vikings of course!", so they quickly worked up a script and trashed it out into this mess. Moreover, the creative decisions in this film are just appalling. It honestly feels like the scriptwriters wrote the characters into a corner on numerous occasions because they had to get them out using the worst possible Deus Ex Machina situations. And I shouldn't forget about the dreadful plot development. Things were barely mentioned, and when they were brought into the highlight, I questioned myself what on earth was going on. Moreover, the ending was just as disappointing as the lack of peripheral vision of all the antagonistic characters.
To be frank, I wasn't wishing for a braindead action revenge story, I was expecting a compelling story. Nevertheless, the constant growling and chanting and the horribly dragged-out scenes didn't help one bit. Precious time was wasted on pointless scenes which brought nothing to the story at all, as they were there most likely to fill time so the film can be considered a motion picture.
As the characters were meaningless and dull, so were the actors' roles. So much could have been done with such a star-studded cast, yet these are Nicole Kidman's and Willem Dafoe's worst roles I have ever seen.
In conclusion, The Northman is a disjointed film that does not accomplish anything in a good runtime, brimming with great actors that had nothing of real value to work with. Its creative decisions are as horrible as the main driving force of the story, revenge, which its highly disingenuous trailers were all about. Honestly, it's not a film worth wasting your time.
