Absolute magic. When I first saw this movie, it was difficult to realize that what I was seeing was as perfect as it really was. The public had never seen Kevin Kline or Peter MacNicol before. The ensemble should have all received Academy Awards. But Meryl Streep's performance is exquisite. She expresses the suffering that Sophie carries, articulated without words. The intersection of William Styron's storytelling, Alan Pacula's cinematic deftness, Marvin Hamlisch's evocative emotional sound, the performance artistry of Streep, MacNicol, and Kline, creates a synergy that may not happen in any other movie. I've not found it in all these years. Honestly, I imagine that all three of these actors felt more exalted when they played these roles than at any other time in their careers.
