For a while sci-fi was getting kinda stale with Star Wars and Marvel. generally high beam lights, neon colours, overwhelming cultures and hard to navigate plots. But Dune is a clear refresher. it doesn't take the same approach and feels almost feudal and ancient in a way. there are no super-advanced AI or mindboggling physics and magic it is simply just humanity. I feel that I am able to actually take in the story and really see the truth in it. These are human characters, quite literally. the middle eastern aesthetic, style and language is so unique and is a real breath of fresh air from our western-style sci-fi's and completely made up alien languages. The sounds of Hebrew and Arabic as well as the writings are consistent in the film giving a certain uniqueness I have not seen in Hollywood or any form of western cinema. Don't even get me started on the score, sometimes the absence of fanfare can be so rewarding and joyful. No disrespect to the themes of star wars or Marvel, but the drums and vocals of Hans Zimmers's score are truly beautiful and set the world in a truly unfamiliar place. The plot also feels as if it has to be nurtured and cared for gently. the story isn't rushed and I feel like each character had their time to shine and show what they have to offer. I like how they are making the first book's two parts really allowing for the story to be done properly. Overall the uniqueness of this film gives me high hopes for its installations and the future of sci-fi as a whole.
