I have a soft spot for CGI that emulates original animations flawlessly (looking at you Peanuts Movie). While I have this soft spot, it doesn't mean a production gets an immediate pass due to this. Lupin III: The First showcases every single one of their reoccurring characters very well, especially the flagship Lupin III.
Lupin III is unique, his character has had decades to build. If I were to compare his to anyone in fiction that American audiences would understand... Indiana Jones as if he was Jason Bourne is the closest comparison for this movie. Lupin is definitely more complex than that, but deals with the stereotypical beats in this story better than most blockbusters.
This movie, in particular, is a generic Indiana Jones story. Beat the Nazis at gaining an archaeological artifact. Anyone who has watched the movie would not disagree that that one sentence is this movie. But it's not Indy. It's Lupin III. He has his group of cohorts that might seem indistinguishable from other formulaic stories, but keep in mind... Lupin the Third and friends have been around for far longer than most. Chances are, the formula is based off Lupin's group, and that shines in this movie.
I highly recommend this movie to any anime fan. Also for any adventure movies fan.
