It was awful, if you're going to watch it go for the old movie. There was a lot Spielberg dropped that made you empathize with Bernardo, Riff, Chino, etc. because they went this way you have almost no sympathy for the characters and most of them are forgettable. I don't think it's the actors fault but the fault of poor directing/terrible script.
As well the sound goes super high and loud down to a whisper so you're thrown out of immersion in the story. If that wasn't bad enough the lighting in the scenes, behind the bleachers at the dance, makes my eyes hurt soooo bad. They do a rainbow glaze effect that makes it hard to see Maria and Tony's faces.
As well everybody kept switching multiple times in the same sentence back and forth between Puerto Rican Spanish to English. That's not normal, everybody I've ever known normally speaks 1 language with one group and with specific other people only the other language except in cases like where you can't think of a word in the 2nd language or if someone is learning the other language.
I know some Spanish and Latin, enough to get my point across as well I watch a lot of movies in many different languages and read the subtitles well.
I had massive trouble following what was going on and being said. It all felt so jarring. I do give props to Anita and Maria, and Tony's Boss who are the only unforgettable characters in the show.
Wish I'd just rewatched the old West Side Story.
