The film evokes entrapment. Built on Duras' text, it successfully illustrates the dark and menacing environment of Paris in wartime. It evokes also erosion of belief, of hope and ultimately of what stood for truth in life. War and separation destroyed many outward things; it also destroyed the inward ones.
