The other night after a few prior bouts of insomnia, I felt the need for some comfort, maybe even a bit of laughter and companionship. So while searching the entertainment excess of what is my new Fire TV, I came upon a movie called "MAN ABOUT TOWN", starring Ben Affleck. OK, sounds good, even better when I saw that it also had Rebecca Romijn, John Cleese, Gina Gershon and Adam Goldberg in it. This seemed promising, so I snuggled down into my bed with a glass of brandy, some over-smoked cheese and my remote.
Approximately 45 minutes later, my head throbbed and my mouth seemed to be stuck in some sort of horrified smirkish grimace. It seems to be just punishment that I jumped into watching this movie, sans reviews, and then learned this abysmal "comedy" gleaned only 3 stars from IMDB and a 29% Audience Score from Rotten Tomatoes. That'll teach me to trust a few actors reputations and the overhyped promotion surrounding a movie before reading the reviews.
Ahh, now the acting; nothing was believable, from the dialog to the storyline to the absurdly sparse apartments and offices. Now I know Mike Binder was the writer/director and I have always liked his work, but perhaps he had some similar bouts of insomnia because this dialog was stiff, flaky and forced. I kept twitching every time I heard someone try to land a punch. Affleck is evidently dreadful at this kind of comedy (big teeth...really?) and should never attempt it ever again, especially when directed by what feels to be a RL friend.
For some reason, this felt like a bunch of peeps got together, had too much to drink and smoke, then thought it would be great fun to make a movie together. And perhaps they did have some fun, but the rest of us will have to work hard at getting back to some sort of normalcy. Shaking off this nonsense takes real effort.
I tried watching more of it but it became too painful, forcing even the cat to run screaming out of the room. What were these people thinking?
Well, I know what I am thinking and I'm feeling positively generous by giving this movie 2 stars (points made ONLY for prior acting feats). Make sure you miss this one!
