I became interested in following F1 racing once again in 2021 after a long absence for many years. Mainly I just lost interest when they downsized the naturally aspirated V-8 engines to the turbo V-6 (with much, much worse engine sound) in 2014, along with the time Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton have started to dominate the sport year after year. That all changes when Max Verstappen has become a newly crowned champion for the 2021 season. I watched Season 4 first to see how Red Bulls have risen to disrupts the championship run from Mercedes.
Now onto Season 1...
The documentary clearly shows the risks each driver takes every time they race and the unforgiving nature and brutality of the mistakes committed in the sport to the team and drivers alike.
This is the first time that viewers get to know and learn about the drivers and the team principals intimately. The behind-the-scene access, in my opinion, is truly incredible. Each episode consistently shows candid interviews with the teams and their drivers and the amount of pressure of winning each race. I believe the documentary chooses to focus on the less successful teams such as Renault, Haas, McLaren, Williams, etc. to reflect in the show title. The drivers in these teams face the fear of being unsigned and thus unemployed for the upcoming season. Therefore, the only choice each driver has is to be better than the drivers around him. However, not every driver will succeed.
This is also the first time the viewers get to know more of the drivers off the tracks. Each driver is different, though they share the same characteristics: the supreme confidence in their talent and driving abilities. I end up cheering for the happy-go-lucky Daniel Ricciardo and the humbled Charles Leclerc and grow to despise the arrogance of Max Verstappen (watch the series and see if you will agree with me).
If you have walked away from the sport (like I have), have some familiarity about F1, or you have never watched the sport, this show is highly recommended. It will be well worth your time.
