It always makes me a little sad when a positive movie gets bad reviews. If you want an Oscar winner this isn’t it, but it’s an extremely cute and endearing film. I love Christmas and this whole time of year. I think a lot of movies miss the mark on trying to cash in on the timing with holiday flicks whether it’s bad acting, bad storyline, or just plain bad. That Christmas is funny when it should be and gives the feels when it should as well. It will be added into my yearly rotation to watch as long as it’s available.

I’ll admit I started watching this show because I thought it would be something my kids would enjoy. But after the first episode’s song making my eyes leak, I was hooked too. This quickly because one of my kids’ favorites and the catchy and actually very good music along with some heartfelt and feel good moments made it one of mine too. Shows like this don’t come around often and that it’s on Netflix is even more surprising. All the songs are now on our playlist and we just finished watching the whole first season for the second time. Here’s hoping for season 2.

As with most sci fi shows..critics lighten up. Is this an action thrill ride? No it’s not and that’s ok. It’s not based in outer space, it doesn’t do over the top effects, and it doesn’t follow the pattern of most in this genre. As a fan of both sci fi and fantasy I get excited whenever a new show comes around only to be disappointed when it’s cancelled after a season. Half the problem are the “fans” who nitpick and go over why it isn’t as good as this show or that one. Just enjoy the show for what it is. Debris has interesting characters with good acting and subtlety and are still being fleshed out. Each episode so far has revealed just a little more of the overall bigger puzzle while giving its own unique issue caused by the debris. The episodes have been varied and I’ve enjoyed each one. The effects it does have are well done and it is a believeable show. For the true sci fi fan it’s a good watch. In the day and age of binging where everyone is used to getting their fix for the next part of the show right away, many don’t have the patience to wait and see what a seemingly unconnected part in this episode means further down the line. I personally like the suspense. For the critics, go see your mom for what to say when you don’t have anything nice to say.

And the award for most annoying hero goes to..the Protector. As a basic premise this is a promising show. As a lover of fantasy and magic I really wanted to like it. I even made my way through 3 seasons despite all its flaws. However it’s just not good television. The acting is forced and attempts at humor fall flat. I’m not against swearing in a show but this is one of those where it’s added liberally and without reason just for “effect”. The lead character doesn’t make a single good decision throughout the show and certainly doesn’t do anything to deserve the loyalty of his followers. There are so many plot holes and story bits that lead to nowhere that even in the suspension of disbelief that’s necessary for a show like this, it’s hard to ignore. If I had a dollar for every time the Protector goes into a curse filled rage against something I’d be a rich man. Supposedly big twists are easily figured out well ahead of their reveal. Fluff and no substance.
