I will start with a question and then expound upon it... Have you hit a wall with turn-based JRPG fatigue?
Then be at ease my friends, because Clair Obscur has the absolute cure!
This game is absolutely incredible. The commonly used word to describe this game is "masterpiece" and is not only the correct word, but scarily, still doesn't feel strong enough.
The game starts you off with about a 45 minute prologue, (if you do everything and speak to everyone) and is so powerful that it can get you legitimately emotional.
The story, voice acting, and music is easily the best of the best. The story is incredibly unique and mysterious, and literally puts its claws into you from the starting moment. The music throughout the game is gorgeous and spot on for evoking the exact emotion at the perfect time, making it feel like an epic theatrical performance for a top tier movie. The voice acting is outstanding and matches absolutely perfect to the character models.
If all of thee above is not enough, the combat is absolutely brilliant. Each character is designed with a completely different fighting style, and all of them are interesting and... well... fun as hell. It incorporates the best of your favorite classic JRPGs with a modern unique twist to keep it continuously entertaining.
You ready for an insane game Mashup to describe the combat? The battles are like if Persona 5, God of War, Mario RPG games, and Dark Souls games had a baby.
It has the fantastic clean menus of Persona 5 with the ability to use a gun shooting mechanic. It has the crisp tight QTE(quick time events) like God of War. It has the awesome parrying and dodge mechanics of a Mario based RPG game. And lastly, those dodge and partying technics have a higher level of difficulty (but not as hard) as a dark souls game. This all makes for one of the most entertaining and engaging JRPG battle systems I have seen in a decade.
Now for the cons... and there are only 2. For the first Act of the game, the lip-syncing of the characters does not match the character models very well, but this is very minor, as it syncs much better later on. The other is the Camera feels a little Wonk in the beginning. Within an hour, you will be completely used to it. My suggestion: Turn the vertical camera sensitivity way down from the beginning and BOOM... problem solved.
In closing, this game is a generational RPG that will be talked about for decades to come. You will mention this game when you speak of Chronotrigger, Final Fantasy, Persona, Suikoden, and more. Take my word for it and go into this game blind. The less you watch/read about more details to this game, the better your experience.
11/10 and Game of the Year seems likely.
