The story describes the Hungarian society in the late 40th, early 50th when people first were enthusiatic about re-building our country, then bitterly disappointed in the communist leadership and administration. Not only struggling being poor but people had to fear for their own life and loved ones' since people were removed from jobs and put in jail without any explanation, tortured, even killed. Its also a story about love between a married couple and their adopted fox terrier, Niki. Shows what wonderful creatures animals are, although they cannot talk, but they have emotions and show their feelings, their affection towards their human family and the love is mutual. Caring for your pet even in difficult times makes life much happier. The sensitive author foretold his own lifepath and fate of his own dog, Niki. His Ars Poetica is : loving our human fellows does not exclude affection towards animals - what is more, if somebody is cruel to animals, cannot be trusted by humans either.
