The people here rating the movie 1 star are just too ignorant to understand what is going on. They are the kind of people used to watch cliché horror movies and can't handle a decent psychological thriller.
There were some people here complaining about "how cheap" the "Thanksgiving scene looked" without realizing that the whole thing with the "plastic turkeys" were happening in a doll's house, not the family's actual dining room. Ugh.
This movie is extremely disturbing. The story is well written, it is interesting to watch but the synopsis is not clear about how graphic the movie can be at times. If you are very sensitive about certain topics as s-icide, childhood trauma or mental illness, ... this movie is not for you.
Here goes a few spoilers...

The mother kills herself in the beginning of the movie and it's horrendous. The son blames his stepmother for it. The stepmother is a survivor of religious child abuse and the stepson finds that out. So both step kids get together to trigger the stepmother using her childhood trauma as much as they can... the stepmother takes controlled medicine due to her mental disorders... the kids take the meds from her, they drug her tea , let her dog die frozen in the cold outside, and when she wakes up they try to convince her that they are dead and stuck in the house by themselves in a purgatory..and things go terribly wrong.
