A few reasons why you shouldn’t support Sia’s movie “Music” which came out recently this month. Sia cast a neurotypical actress to play an autistic character rather than an autistic actress. The film contains harmful stereotypes about autism. In a lot of interviews about the film, Sia also reinforces these stereotypes. Sia received “advice” on the film from Autism Speaks (a well known autism hate group). Several autistic users have mentioned that the film apparently contains visual effects which aren’t friendly for an autistic audience. Sia publicly responded very rudely to criticism about her casting choice and representation of autism, and she herself admitted that the casting was ableist. Instead of including autistic people in a narrative about autism, Sia has created inspiration porn which isn’t respectful of the people it’s portraying or even friendly for us to view.
