Primary reason I watched ‘The Pacific’ is because my Dad was a Marine who fought in the South Pacific Campaign on Pelelieu and Okinawa. He was wounded on both Islands and came home after surgery in a field hospital, on a hospital ship from Okinawa. He did not talk about his time spent fighting in WWII and I never pushed for conversation. He has passed and I have had a real desire to learn about that time of his life. Talking with Marines who watched this mini series confirmed ‘The Pacific’ pretty much told it as it happened and said there was pure hatred on both sides. Watching the horror of what the young Marines went through could be called ‘hell’. I feel Spielberg and Hanks did an excellent job of depicting a horrible time of our history. Watching the battles fought have earned my respect and admiration of these hero’s.
I’ve ordered the book ‘With The Old Breed’ hoping I have the guts to read it.
