I adore "Ghost." It's a film that masterfully combines romance and glamour, sometimes even simultaneously. It skillfully melds sentimentality with the supernatural. The production values impress, with excellent special effects, costumes, lighting, sets, and cinematography. The soundtrack, particularly "Unchained Melody," is emotionally resonant and used effectively. The script is of high quality, featuring a compelling love-beyond-the-grave theme and an ending that proves sentimentality can be powerful. Jerry Zucker's direction shines. The performances are notable, with Patrick Swayze delivering one of his finest as the murdered banker attempting to warn his girlfriend. Demi Moore, though initially unremarkable, improves as the film progresses. However, it's Whoopi Goldberg who steals the show with an outstanding performance that seamlessly blends into the narrative. In summary, "Ghost" is an outstanding film with a compelling premise, well worth watching for Swayze and Goldberg. Jerry Zucker, known for directing comedies like "AIRPLANE!" and "TOP SECRET," successfully transitions to drama with this gentle romance, which has much to offer. Despite its abundant sentimentality and schmaltzy love scenes, the director handles them effectively. While Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore may not be considered the world's greatest actors, they efficiently portray their roles. The special effects, courtesy of Industrial Light & Magic, known for later big-budget hits like "TERMINATOR 2," stand out. Scenes with Swayze in ghost form, moving through doors and people, are exceptionally well done, as are heavenly scenes, especially in the final moments. Notably, the shadowy creatures that emerge from darkness to drag those who committed heinous sins in life to hell are impressive and chilling.
With numerous action sequences, including a standout chase scene and an excellent subway ghost scene, "Ghost" offers a satisfying blend of romance, comedy, thriller, fantasy, and mystery. It caters to those who appreciate heartwarming stories. Its well-deserved Oscar wins further highlight its quality.
