While Orwell's Animal Farm looks like a fable on communism and Communist Russia, I see it as the way all human ideologies go. They begin as a small fantastic idea among friends, expand and marketed to unwitting public who now espouse them, defend them and die for them. In this process, a canal of ideologues is created which benefits from the now viral ideology. This cabal uses the ideology to control and bend the rest of society. This is what Orwell's book means to me. In application, take a look at the idea of democracy. What started as a Greek ideal has become an American export. In Nigeria today, politicians use this to grab political and economic power, steal and loot state funds and put the rest of society in chains of poverty. Meanwhile the ideal is promoted as the best form of government. The local political leadership behaves like colonial masters who were once considered as slave drivers. I choose to refer to this phenomenon as colonialism at the bridgehead of the colony. Ideology and hegemony behave in the same manner.
