Plot:
Probably the best film recreation of Avatar The Last Airbender we will see for a while.
Characters:
Cliche
Sisu is literally Aang
Raya is slightly more complex but I’ve seen rollercoasters less up and down than her arc. Her whole arc is that she doesn’t trust because she was betrayed but she literally trusts a Baby 10 minutes after it betrays her.
The Baby and co is nothing but a joke, I imagine kids like the joke (yeah a baby doing karate how random) but it’s nothing amazing.
The Prawn Kid I am really upset I don’t remember his name, he is a good character despite having little to work with. He’s a fun energetic personality but he’s only like that because if he ever slowed down he would remember what he lost.
I like him but he sort of stops all character growth when the Gruff Guy comes into this little fellowship.
Gruff Guy is probably my favourite character despite only having 5 minutes of being a character. He’s a guy who has built this whole idea about loving causing pain and suffering but when he loses his family and feels that pain for himself he stops and almost realises the error of his ways.
A far better character than many of the others and could stand in his own film imo.
Mean Girl. She’s a tricky one, she starts as one of those generic villains that has a good back and forth with the hero but has arguably the best arc in the film.
It goes from everything being her fault, to everything being half her fault, to saving the world. It’s not as masterfully crafted as Zuko’s shift to the light but considering the time they had here she is done very well.
The Zombies. They serve their purpose I guess. They have a poor design but they are more of an evil force than a villain and in that aspect they excel.
They truly make the world feel dead in the brief moments between cities and are constantly a threat. Generic and done before but gets the job done.
Action:
Revolutionary.
The fights get shot better and better each time and this makes the fights look better but means the choreography is just as good the whole film.
Acting:
Probably the strongest point in this film alongside the animation. The actors give strong performances and make all the characters noticeably different (which helps get across the point of the film very well).
Ultimately this film is certainly not bad, hell I’d even argue not just okay as well, the characters are passable and do undergo growth the tension is there and I did enjoy travelling the world with this little fellowship.
6-7/10 Watch with Kids (then show them Avatar The Last Airbender)
