One of my problems with Kataang was how they had no reason to be together. Aang has more friends and enjoys being respected from being the Avatar. He gets inspiration from many, many other characters, especially Toph. Plus, leading up to the kiss at the end of the show, there were only Zuko's field trips, which were individual character arcs with no romantic elements involved in any way. But who's the hottest girl in Team Avatar! KATARA! Bryke's style of romance is just beauty in attraction and not development and character. The show never focuses on it intensely to make them BOTH grow TOGETHER. That's what Rayllum does perfectly. First of all they're by themselves after Ezran leaves. And look at their background too. Callum is a weakling who barely counts as royalty and therefore is bullied by Soren, calling him the "step-prince." Rayla is a wannabe assassin trying to make up for the crimes her parents committed, when they really did lots of good compared to everyone else. They have helped each other increase their self-confidence and saved each other from their troubles. It's amazing how they've grown together. Another thing: It's not based on attraction. Callum and Rayla had zero attraction to each other in Season 2. But that was the season where they realized how much they needed to trust each other and care for each other. This is why the first Rayllum kiss is completely out of the blue and one-sided. Rayla just kisses Callum in response to his kind words of encouragement. (He's trying to help her with her parents.) Also, their romance isn't overemphasized and isn't just plopped into different sections of the story for dramatic or romantic effect, like Kataang does. They spread it out and make it feel more natural and fluid with how their development progresses, and doesn't outshine any other part of the season's plot or characters. I rate Rayllum a 10/10 from these core points alone. If you want a remaster of Sokka's Yue, please watch this show.
