This is entertaining, but that is a bit like saying ‘this car is good ‘cos it gets you where you need to be’. Apple TV+ is a paid subscription service so should deliver entertainment. Their shows always look spectacular, which is important to me, but equally the writing and acting is often very shallow. All the usual stereotypes are here in Invasion; men are generally one dimensional, disproportionately violent, dishonest and volatile whilst the female characters have depth, are measured, in control etc, etc.. which although we’ve come to expect this, for that reason it is also tiresome. Once you’ve jumped that inevitable hurdle, it does draw you in as there is more to this than just ‘we’re under attack, let’s nuke ‘em!’. However, maybe that would be better in this case, because the deep drama stuff is actually pretty badly written and acted. In short, I watched a low budget, uk made kitchen sink drama from the ‘90s for about the tenth time the other day and enjoyed it a million more times than this…simply because it’s brilliantly written and brilliantly acted, often ad lib. Not a ‘ticked box’ in sight, no messages to drive home. Invasion isn’t that. Its had a lot of money thrown at it sure..but you can’t substitute proper talent, of which their is very little here.
