Not enough emotion, I'm sorry to say. The animation looks good - sometimes great - as scenery and sets, but for characters, it's really plastic and lifeless. I was enjoying it okay, but then we got to the pivotal scene where the originals and clones are fighting each other, and not only did they not bother to use either the original Japanese version's or the English dub's explanation for Mewtwo's motivations, leaving it very unclear as to why the clones are fighting in the first place, but the music is haphazard and the animation just makes it all look and feel like a video game. There's no feeling of animosity or violence or peril in the fight, the way there was in the original. And the scene after, where all the Pokémon are crying? Is just the same. Ikue Ohtani is clearly trying to bring some life to it with her voice acting as Pikachu, but all the characters look like lifeless dolls, so it's impossible to feel anything. And that, for such an emotional and well-loved scene, is unforgivable.
I like some things about this movie, like, for example, that they based it off the Japanese script and Dan Green's acting as Mewtwo. But when I think of the raw emotion that they sacrificed for this CGI, I have to say, just go watch the original. Flaws and all, it holds up. This started out okay, but by the end it was just a mess. I'm not even mad - I'm just disappointed.
P. S. AND THEY DIDN'T EVEN EXPLAIN HOW POKÉMON TEARS BRING SOMEONE BACK TO LIFE. WHAT THE HECK.
