Costanzo did a terrific job directing "My Brilliant Friend" . I am not familiar of Ferrante's work as an author. Certainly ten million readers speaks loudly to her ability and her voice. I caught the third installment last evening on HBO. Elena and Lila are living in Naples in the 1950's post WW 2. The episode was mesmerizing. I am attracted to the friendships of women at all ages. Margherita Mazzuco and Gaia Girace were wonderful depicting these young women.
Authenticity comes to mind here. I was drawn in to the depth of their friendship. Like a finger on the edge of a glass... when you rub your fingers on the lip just right, the glass rings out.
I will watch the entire series and play to buy E. Ferrante's books. I understand that the author and director had years of getting this right. I, for one, am glad they persevered. Authenticity is rare.
