This book was the worst thing I've ever read. I had to read this for english class, and it was just a really hard read. The amount of plot holes, lack of character development, bad writing, nonsensical paragraphs, plot armor, world building, etc. is just astonishingly terrible.
It started off fine, but past the halfway point in the book, it just turned into a bunch of nonsensical slop. The figurative language, instead of drawing me in and producing images in my head, made me laugh by how stupid it sounded.
Binti's character development is rushed, and few and far between. Her switch up on her opinion of the Meduse happens in one paragraph. ONE PARAGRAPH. Ridiculous. The slaughter of all her friends and professors is barely discussed. The grief is passed over in just a few sentences. It should've definitely been discussed more, and Binti should've felt more reluctant to help the Meduse. She is almost pyschopathic, laughing wildly at random points thoughout the story for unexplained reasons. A little concerning.
Also the Meduse's excuse for killing everyone on the ship? Ridiculous! It seems like a silly excuse one would make up on the spot when lying to one's parents. It doesn't justify anything.
Do not read this book. However, If you're looking for a quick read where you can kind of just turn off your brain and read random blabber that's supposed to have deep meaning, then go right ahead.
This book had a lot of potential where I thought it would do an excellent job of exploring racism and human flaws. I was sadly greatly mistaken.
