A masterpiece, by Illumination standards. It’s an enjoyable kid’s film that’s tolerable for an older audience. The plot was solid, the soundtrack was great, the visuals were impressive. I liked most of the characters, although they all lacked depth. The character arcs were barely flushed out, and the message was constantly being shoved in your face. It’s plot is standard but it works, and I found none of these aspects to be annoying enough to bother me. Some scenes really hit, but the overall film was unimpressive enough that their impact is drowned out. If you have younger kids, I’d definitely consider checking this movie out, but don’t expect something amazing.
