Everyone does well, from the cast to costumes and sets, but people have clearly not seen it on Broadway. This is not a downcast toward the film, the actors and actresses carry their parts well, but after seeing it on Broadway last year I find myself craving more and a bit bothered, simply because the cast on Broadway are a different breed of performers and singers, and that’s no exaggeration. The movie leaves more to be desired, especially from Elphaba. Just YouTube Alyssa Fox or Mary Kate Morrisey (any past Broadway Elphaba) and you’ll see what I am talking about here. Or better yet, go see it on Broadway. When someone goes into the movie with an openness and hope that they bring justice to the musical, it’s slightly deflating when you’re rooting for the movie cast but it doesn’t quite reach what you’re hoping for vocally. I feel like I’m not the only one who thinks/feels this way.
