Agreed, a powerful and moving tale of a post-apocalyptic society. However, it was a little two-dimensional in places e.g. the husband/wife/baby demise was like a sketch from Harry Enfield and Chums: "I say. Goodnight, darling" and the shallow racing car characters didn't develop at all before dying. The random Morse Code mystery was brilliant and kept me in suspense until it was resolved. Overall, a great book but somewhat trapped in the Biggles tradition. Clearly presented in the late 1940s style, I could draw parallels with the clipped English speech movie, Brief Encounter.
