This series was a journey I haven’t experienced in a while.
The first two books I personally found amazing, and I do agree that the third also fits the precedence.
Coming to the final chapters I had to put the book down in order to digest the plot. Taking a break to think gave the book the justice it deserved.
Mockingjay’s conclusion left me feeling satisfied but empty, I think that’s the best way to describe it. I’m so happy with the books I love them, but as you think about how good they are, you’re filled with emotions. What this series nails and particularly this book is delivering raw emotion. Emotion that you do not have time to express due to the fast nature of the end of the plot and as you reach the final chapter, the emotion you’ve been suppressing comes out as everything fits together.
Despite not being given the answers to all the questions you want while reading the last couple chapters, you feel satisfied as you expect to not be given answers as things are not the same.
Critically, the first segment of the book was slow. I enjoyed the descriptions of 13, and the initial plot but it was admittedly slow. However what I’ve come to realise is that for the three books, it needs that amount of inaction in order to justify the action. If it was as fast paced as the second half (like during the Quarter Quell) it would be confusing and feel rushed.
There were some characters in this edition which were flat, namely the members of the Star Squad and some people part of 13. This meant that certain deaths didn’t hold enough meaning. I would’ve liked to learn more about Finnick and even more depth into Coin. However we learned the most about Katniss, and the people she deemed important.
I thoroughly throughly enjoyed the series, it gave such an impact on me, emotionally and philosophically. Thanks Collins for making this art.
