Why spend $40 million for a story you have no intention of bringing to life?
Just make up something new. They bought the rights to the Mayfairs for name recognition only in order to bring those fans in, then proceeded to make it up as they went along.
Needed that HBO money if they were ever going to do it right. Buffy was deeper than this.
