I wasn't expecting a musical, and while watching the movie I kept waiting for the movie to get back to the storyline and action. In my opinion this fell short of the original movie. I am probably not safisticated enough to appreciate the musical version of what has been considered one of the greatest MOVIES ever produced, but this was not a remake of the movie and I dont feel qualified rating a movie musical with the expectation for seeing a remake of the movie, not the theatrical remake of the Broadway theater version. I might be wrong but I don't recall many movie remakes being converted to the big screen as a Musical. If you had to recommend anyone that had never seen "The Color Purple", which version would you recommend? For me, I would not even hesitate and point them to the original movie 🍿
