This book is reminiscent of Hemingway at his best, especially " For whom the bell tolls" . The characterisation is very well done and the developing relationship between Paul and Katerina compelling. The letters between them at the end of the book beautifully written and moving.

I cannot understand the mixed reviews. I watched the original 1994 version on TV a couple of weeks ago and thought it was good but too cutesy by half. The voice of young Simba was especially irritating.
This latest version was simply stunning by comparison, from the water and rock pools to the Mandrill's eyes, to the dramatic and dark violent end. Congrats to all who made it. 5 Stars.

I have just reread Robert Hughes' wonderful book. Many parts of it make you weep, others make you laugh out loud. Starting in Georgian England this hugely engrossing work is filled with the lives of all who made up the trials and convictions, the transportation to and the incarceration of England's "criminal class" and political prisoners to Australia. It details the early history of the penal colonies in NSW and Van Diemen's Land until the final ending of the System in Western Australia. Brilliant.
