It's a coming of ages story with a difference.
Three young men from different walks of life have met at a Correction Unit for under 18 's.
Emmet has served his time and has been driven home by the Warden to his home. A farm that is being Recovered by the bank in lieu of debts his father was unable to pay, before his death.
The other two had been hiding in the boot of the car and had not finished their sentence
One boy, Wooley, is vulnerable, impressionable and gentle, and extremely wealthy.
The third Duchess, has had a hard time growing up and is more street wise and canny, and has decided to capitalise on the information that Wooley has a legacy of 150, 000 dollars to be secreted away in his grandfathers country house. A legacy Wooley has intimated can be shared between them.
Through a series of events, adventures, self discovery and pure luck, the boys travel across America to New York along the Lincoln Highway and finally reach their goal. The star of the show is probably Billy, Emmett's 8/9 year old brother who is a bright boy who loves to read about adventures and heroes.
It is an interesting novel , spoken through the voices of the characters and others they meet along the way, some good and some not!
It is definitely a page turner, and a moving story of coincidences , almost a modern parable, and a series of unfortunate events that despite everything, work out reasonably well for at least half the cast.
