The people who have not read the book enjoyed the film. Thomas Vinterberg sold the soul of the book for the views. Troy's grief, Bathsheba's grief (and character) and the gravity of the consequences of her actions do not stay with you as they do when you read the book. Kudos to Michael Sheen for his work in the film. He was the only actor to do justice to the character they portrayed.
