I agree with Tom Turner's review below. The snappy repartee is right out of a screwball comedy, like one directed by Preston Sturges in the 30's or 40's. It has a slightly more cynical tone that might betray a more jaundiced contemporary viewpoint, but still the two leads trading barbs is pretty much the entire movie. There's not any slapstick silliness as you might find in a screwball comedy, except maybe the sex scene in the field. So you either like that style or you don't. Some may think it's overwritten or mean-tempered but that just goes with the territory. The chemistry between them is clear but it's all about the dialogue, which is sometimes more like duelling soliloquies! As the Roger Ebert reviewer wrote, it almost plays like a theater production with the protagonists providing all the lines, the narration and most of the plot. Or maybe a rom-com version of 'My Dinner With Andre?' Whatever, I thought it was mordantly funny. The screenwriter deserves an award.
