Wasn't Scary, BUT VERY BADASS.
(May contain spoilers)
I expected The Nun to be a creepy, jumpscare-heavy horror film, but it wasn’t. That’s because it wasn’t written to scare people—it was written around the character of an outcast nun who does things her own way. She smokes, she cusses, but she deeply cares, and she’ll do anything to save the boy.
She does feel fear, but not for herself—only for the boy. And maybe that’s why the movie isn’t scary. The protagonist is fearless in the face of evil; she confronts it head-on. In order for a horror movie to truly be terrifying, the audience needs to sense real fear from the main characters. But in this film, most of them are incredibly brave. They fear for the boy, but not the devil itself.
That said, the performances were great. The characters felt real and engaging. However, if you're expecting a terrifying horror experience, you’ll be disappointed. Instead, the film plays out more like a high-stakes mind game with death as the price.
