Reads like a white projection of 1950s America on the Crow people. The gender focus was atrocious: everything was a comparison between the abilities of women and men, with women assumed to be inferior. "I’d like to see how well she does with a rifle. I’ll bet she will handle it as well as any of the men.” Barf. The writing was amateurish: bulky dialogue attributions, exposition stuffed into interiority, overuse of ellipses, and redundancies. It was a cringe fest. After a few chapters, I distrusted the author so much, because of the terrible writing, that I started googling, and couldn't verify a lot of her assertions about Crow culture. Did she research? Did she have Crow beta readers? I wouldn't have finished it, except it was a book club choice.
