The obvious reaction to the main character is to think ill of her and her ways and to feel sorry for everyone else, especially her husband and son.
Upon reflection, I realize most of her comments were accurate, despite the unpleasant delivery and excessive sharing. It was also apparent she was troubled (hurt, traumatized), though her husband nor son never seemed to see fit to offer love nor comfort - despite the guaranteed venom they'd likely receive in return. Her husband and son seemed to choose shutting down instead of interacting with her, which one might understand, if not for their contradictory behavior which disrespected and disregarded her.
The hard truths, as I saw them, included her caring for herself as counseled by her sister, who did choose love of her over shutting down.
We all have hard truths within our imperfect lives. Facing them is quite empowering, despite tough journeys.
