Intriguing from the start, sure, but it's a really slow burn overall. None of the characters are really appealing, but it has a lot of good 'hard'-sci-fi ideas that I haven't seen used elsewhere, which is probably the best thing about it. That, and the things it taught me about modern chinese history and culture (assuming it's not entirely fictional) were the most interesting elements for me (being an ignorant foreigner).
