It’s beyond belief that any author worth his salt could do such a woeful job of capturing Australian culture and language. It’s not just awful but culturally insulting - imagine someone from England or Australian defining a New Yorker or someone from LA in a novel by having them use wording such as ‘shucks, ma’am’, ‘howdy pardner’ or ‘hot diggity damn!’ and having them all chew tobacco and spit - well that’s how his laughable take on Australians comes across. Coban couldn’t even get the spelling of the resort town right - it’s Palm Coast, not Palm’s Coast, and senior police officers are not called Sheriff in Australia, that’s an imposition of American terminology. Same again with the overuse and frequently incorrect application of ‘mate’ which at times is cringeworthy.
