I loved the book. What I especially loved were the internal thoughts of a young girl interpreting her reality. Her process of self compassion was slow and fascinating. Everyone in her family were doing the best they could but they were flawed and isolated in their own survival. Her portrayal of Shawn was complicated and spot on. His sadism is repeatedly denied. This book was similar to “The Glass Castle “ in that the family members were hostage to a mentally ill father. The parents didn’t fight and the authority of the father was not questioned. Her mother
Is intuitive and smart but must uphold her allegiance to her damaged husband.
Rather than hold her husband to account she sacrificed her daughter who questioned her own sanity. As mentioned in the 12 step program the sickest person in the family gets all the attention. I give the author my sincere congratulations
