I read this book with one of the children I nanny and we both loved it! She’s about 10 years old and it was the perfect reading level for her. This may not be my first pick now, but at the time, it is the book that motivated me to begin reading again. After YEARS of not reading books (since high school), this is the one that made me want to pick up a book again. For that- it deserves 5 stars.
Summary (spoilers ahead):
The book follows the life of a 12-year-old girl named Emmy as she goes through a big life change – her mom is sending her from Connecticut to a boarding school in England, so that she can film a reality TV show around the United States. Aside from this very obvious life change, Emmy gets wrapped into some mystery behind her father, whom disappeared when she was just three. After arriving to school, she quickly finds herself with two best friends, Lola and Jack, as well as a few enemies. Right before Emmy came to school, she received a strange letter, leading her to a hidden box of medallions in her attic that belong to her missing father. At Wellsworth Academy she comes across symbols from the medallions on books and walls. These signs lead her to learning about Wellsworth’s secret society: The Order of Black Hollow Lane. She soon learns that her dad‘s disappearance has to do with this society. Even after many challenges, secrets, and betrayals, Emmy still pushes to uncover the truth about her dad and the secrets of her new school with the help of Jack and Lola.
