One of my favorite Disney movies of all time! Beautiful animation, innovative mix of Western and Eastern animation styles. For me, most relatable movie ever! Thank you for sharing this important and healing film!!! It's so helpful for kids of all races who are growing up. I wish I had something like this when I was a teen!
I was a teen in 2002--I got ALL the references. LOVE!!!
Thanks Disney-Pixar, and the boss women and men who made this film!
I'm Chinese-American. The Chinese-Canadian/ Chinese-American experience is PERFECTLY captured. Cultural details--all completely on point.
I got my Dad to watch this. He is never into animated films, yet he was engaged the whole time and loved it! WIN
Anyone who criticizes this movie does NOT have a good understanding of Disney films in general. Kids were rebellious and did their own thing (regardless of parental/ family wishes) in most Disney films (Little Mermaid literally changed her body and left her home to meet a hot guy; Simba went somewhere his dad told him not to go, and got his dad killed; Anna in Frozen put her kingdom in jeopardy by running out and trying to marry this random guy, Jasmine told her Sultan dad that she was not a prize to be won...etc). If people think girls shouldn't get to talk about their periods or bodies without being ashamed, they are contributing to a misogynistic world, and they are contributing to the fear and loneliness kids have regarding puberty.
And to the guy who wrote in an article that the film is not relatable and seems really narrow, like it was written only for Domee Shi's Chinese-Canadian friends--I would like to ask, should we relate more with an ice princess who can create castles of ice with her bare hands, in a kingdom that doesn't even exist? Or should we relate more with talking toys, or a girl who meets talking clocks and candles?
Watch this film! A beautiful example of Disney-Pixar magic!
