The beginning is somewhat confusing in that the last movie ended with all of the jaegers destroyed and the breach closed. So why would the world go through the expense and effort required to build several more jaegers without at least some implied threat of another breach. Yet that appears to be the situation. Alright, fine... I can get past that. I can even get past the fact that marshall Pentecost has an adult son out there that we never knew about, and that he's a fine Jaeger pilot. Maybe the film makers didn't want to waste valuable screen time building up a jaeger force and training some qualified pilots. One would assume that we could jump right into some kaiju-butt-kicking eye candy. It doesn't happen, though. In fact, when the kaiju finally appear, they seem like an afterthought. Not to say they don't look cool... they do. But they are barely fleshed out and not the least bit scary, unlike the kaiju from the first movie. One can't help feeling a bit cheated. The film is more of a coming of age tale centered on Pentecost's son and a largely anonymous group of teenagers, and a poor one at that. The most complex character in this movie is that of Newt, the other 2 main characters are a little more fleshed out than the rest, but not by much. And the main objective of the kaiju is ridiculous, even by movie standards. As a person with a degree in geology, I wanted to laugh. I was really looking forward to this movie as I had thoroughly enjoyed the first one and have watched it repeatedly. If there is a sequel, I hope it gets the franchise back on track. Go back to kaiju and jaegers bashing each other... Please.
