The most realistic movie about love or break-up?
Film is told through the perspective of our main character Tom, who grew up watching fairy tale and unrealistic Hollywood romance and believes in true love and especially in the concept of 'The One'. He loves and studied architect but not following his dream. He's stuck in a boring job and he's not doing anything for his situation. but then one day he saw a girl name Summer, new assistant of his boss. And then by the Hollywood rule just by the first looks(keep in mind that he knows nothing about her, not even her name) he falls for her and he believes that he found 'The One'.
Summer on the other hand is free spirited more practical and may be little cold. She doesn't even believe in love. She's afraid of being in relationship. In her childhood her parents got divorced, this incident made a deep emotional scar on her.
So, this is the story of these two vastly different people and how they both gonna impact each other life.
This film ask the question about fate. Is everything happens in universe is predetermined or its just happens randomly??
It is a film where plot and characters are real but they told in a slightly superficial way just like la la land.
The use of wide aspect ratio, split screen, a black and white sequence, a musical number, a narrator, and ofcourse the use of non linear way of storytelling, these all things contribute in making a film which feels unrealistic or fairy taley but tells a realistic tale of two people.
The screenplay is flawless. On paper this movie feels may be shorter but in just 90 minute writers packed so much. Its a fast and tight screenplay, despite of its shorter length it doesn't feel short.
The editing is mostly subtle. Because this film constantly jumping from one timeline to another, transition between scenes are very important, thats why they use match cuts and and J-cuts to maintain a sense of flow within these transition.
Camera movement is sometime subtle and sometimes frantic. It uses the frantic whip pan for needed energy to subtle push in,which emphasis on character. Because of the tone of the film is somewhat real and surreal these changes in camera movement really enhances the experience.
Framing is simple as well as the cinematography which mainly use light colours but go dark or uses cold colours to show the state of character.
So, overall direction of this film is pretty solid and screenplay is amazing and both actors did great job as well.
This is one of my favourite movies for sure.
